Bad Piggies: Spin off Angry Birds physics based puzzler
With the limited success of Amazing Alex in the last few months, Rovio has
returned to the series that put their names on the mobile gaming map, Angry
Birds no less. However, instead of the cheery and chirpy birds being the stars
of the show, this time round it’s those pesky pigs. Presented in a comic book
style, the pigs have lost their grand scheme plans to steal yet more precious
bird eggs and thus the game is set around retrieving the torn up paper plans
piece by piece. Will the game live up to the high expectations set by Angry
Birds? Read on to find out.

Rovio certainly knows what it’s good at, and Bad Piggies does not stray far
from the physics based puzzler formula it is known for. In this latest release,
the levels are based around collecting a piece of the plan located at the
level’s finish line. In order to do this you have to setup a machine at the
beginning to help the pigs navigate around the level successfully. To start with
the levels are simple and straight forward, requiring little to no thought in
the construction of your vehicle. However as you progress further into the 90
levels, you are introduced to more and more items allowing more considered
designs.
The basic items include wooden frames and wheels as the core building blocks
of transport with stronger components such as steel wheels required as the
levels get more treacherous. However, the more interesting and fun aspects comes
with how you attach the various propellants. From mechanical fans and fizzy soft
drink bottles to helium balloons and even TNT at your disposal, you really have
a big choice of how to design your vehicle.

Bad Piggies has kept the familiar 3 star award system of Angry Birds however
the way in which these are awarded has changed. Instead of seemingly random
score targets in order to achieve the gradual star levels, you have to fulfil
certain criteria shown before the start of each level in order to obtain the
highest scoring. The criteria mainly revolve around collecting stars and
completing the levels within a certain amount of time. One of the more difficult
criteria include the disallowed use of a crucial propellant in your vehicle
design, always a hard star to achieve.
Without obsessing over obtaining all 3 stars for every level, the 90 levels
should take no more than a few hours to complete, an entertaining few hours at
that. The levels are well thought out and challenging at times, arguably more so
than Angry Birds. Where with Angry Birds there was a certain amount of trial and
error, Bad Piggies requires more planning and skill. This may prove to be less
appealing to the casual gamer but should please more “true” gamers out
there.
Bad Piggies looks and sounds great. You would expect no less from Rovio.
However I found that the pigs are just not as interesting and compelling lead
characters as their feathered counter parts. As a result I didn’t feel the
desire to assist them in their quest. This is probably due to the emotional
attachment that I have unwittingly developed for the Angry Birds. Something that
many gamers would sympathise with but may change over time.
Verdict: 4/5 Bad Piggies offers the same winning physics based puzzler
formula as Angry Birds but with a refreshing twist. Although it starts off
extremely fun and entertaining, I found it didn’t scale as well with the later
levels as you spend too much time creating your vehicle. Nonetheless Bad Piggies
is a good game and definitely worth checking out for Angry Birds and puzzle fans
alike.
