Feed the Penguin: A cutesy, pleasant and stress free puzzle game.
There are so many 3D games nowadays that people just automatically expect to
see fully rendered pretty graphics. But as we saw with some games recently
(like Star Splitter 3D), graphics are only part of the package and without a
decent game then the visual effects are almost wasted. Feed the Penguin is a
great example that 3D isn’t necessary in every game. Not only does it have a
fun core, but it also has a distinct hand drawn graphics style which makes this
game rather pretty.

Gameplay: This puzzle game is like a controlled version of
flight control crossed with an Adobe Illustrator vector drawer. On the screen
you’ll see a dashed line with blue dots on it. The dotted line indicates the
path which the penguin will travel along and you need to move the dots around to
manipulate the journey. Eventhough everyone wants to send the penguins straight
into the power sockets, that’s not what you’re meant to do. Instead you have to
help the penguin collect all the food in each level to advance to the next. As
well as the power plugs, people have to avoid all the other random objects in
the way… like spiders and cockroaches… which are as big as the penguin… scary
stuff!… This is such a casual game though because you’ve got all the time in the
world to set everything up. Once you’re ready then you can tap the play button
in the left corner of the screen and watch the penguin slide his way to
freedom.
Along with snacking on the treats, players can also help the penguin light up
the three bulbs which are dotted around. These light bulbs are effectively the
game’s star system which add in a little bit of competitive element. But it’s
not all just for show because the lights will eventually tally up to unlock the
next room.

The good stuff: This is a charming brain teaser that is
perfect for any puzzle gamer. The distinctive hand drawn art style is very
endearing and easy on the eyes. In short, the atmosphere that’s created is very
relaxing and this marries up with the simple and intuitive game controls.
A couple of negatives: The in-game ads will be in the way
sometimes because you’ll want to move one of the blue dots underneath the ad!
In fact if you do move the blue dot that far then you’ll probably need to
restart the round because you won’t be able to touch the blue dot again.
There’s also the issue of having no hints, but there is already a fully drawn
path so it should still be possible to figure out the solution.
Rating: 4/5 Fun, relaxing, simple… FREE… what more could you ask for? Don’t
