2014 Yamaha Super Ténéré First Look

Yamaha Motor Corp unveiled the last of its last 2014 models this week, a revised Super Ténéré and Super Ténéré ES. Both bikes are updated based on feedback from consumers and get a reworked engine, ergonomics, and rider interface, with the ES adding electronically adjustable suspension.

“We’ve listened to the media as well as our riders for how to improve this bike,” Yamaha Motorcycle Product Planning Manager Derek Brooks says. “We certainly know that there was some request for more exciting power character, especially the low end right off of idle. Also some requests for improved comfort or ride position, as well as ease of use for some of the features,” Brooks adds. By updating the shape of the exhaust port and removing the exhaust crossover tube, Yamaha has provided the 1199cc parallel-twin engine with an additional 2 horsepower and 1.5 foot-pounds of torque. Yamaha’s Drive Mode throttle has a Touring and Sport mode, and for 2014 there’s a larger disparity between those modes for better use on the road.

Removable bar risers place the 2014 model’s handlebar 10mm higher and 10mm closer to the rider, which addresses the concern surrounding comfort in myriad riding environments. The standard and ES version get an easy-to-operate multi-function meter with a more modern design and large fuel gauge, in addition to a reshaped windscreen that’s claimed to provide superior wind protection as well as less wind noise. The Super Ténéré’s seat and windscreen are both adjustable without the use of tools.

The 2014 Super Ténéré ES model’s electronically adjusted suspension offers four pre-load settings, three damping adjustments (Soft, Standard, or Hard) and an additional seven fine-tuning damping adjustments, which allows riders to alter the suspension based on road conditions and pace. The ES model also gets heated grips with three levels of adjustment.

The 2014 Yamaha Super Ténéré will sell for $15,090, and the Super Ténéré ES will have an MSRP of $16,190.

2015 Yamaha SR400 First Look

After strong US dealer response, Yamaha has announced it will import the retro SR400 as a 2015 model. The new bike harkens back to Yamaha's own SR500, a single-cylinder model first offered in 1978, but incorporates modern features such as fuel injection. One amenity not included, however, is electric start - the SR400 is kickstart-only, which according to Yamaha gives it retro appeal and "draws attention from old school motorcycle fans." The original SR was a very popular model for café-style modifications, and Yamaha touts the SR400 as "one of the best platforms for customization."

The 2015 SR400 will be available in liquid graphite in June of this year, with an MSRP of $5,990.

The SR400 is powered by a 399cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled, SOHC, 2-valve engine that produces a torquey, “thumper” engine character that makes it an absolute blast to ride.

The SR weighs only 384 pounds and has a very narrow frame matched to a low seat height of only 31 inches. This combination makes for a machine that is well suited to both entry riders as well as experienced enthusiasts.

The uniqueness of the SR is confirmed with the fact that it is a kick-start motorcycle. The retro appeal of this bike lies in its lack of a push button starter. As a kick-start only machine it draws attention from old school motorcycle fans and appeals to more modern motorcycle enthusiasts who value the appeal of riding a motorcycle that stands out in the crowd.

The Yamaha SR400 is the perfect motorcycle for both the custom bike builder and the rider who loves personalization. The SR is world renowned for its basis as the perfect platform as a Café or Street Tracker machine. Personalization and customization are limited only by the designer’s imagination.

ENGINE

399cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve power plant with electronic fuel injection combined with its light-weight makes for a very fun motorcycle to ride.

Easy to start, kick-starter is actuated through a handlebar mounted compression release that makes starting the SR quick and easy with very little effort.

The torquey, single-cylinder engine provides “thumper” appeal and engine character with a feeling of direct power connection to the rear wheel adding to the fun factor of the SR.

Single-cylinder design is easy to maintain and modify.

CHASSIS/SUSPENSION

Slim, narrow, double-cradle steel frame makes for a very compact body design for excellent rider maneuverability.

3.2 gallon fuel tank offers excellent touring range with an estimated 96 miles per gallon depending on the weight of the rider, passenger and any cargo.

Compact 55.5” wheelbase makes for quick, light steering for fun riding when the roads get twisty.

Front disc brake provides optimum stopping power.

Chain final drive provides excellent transfer of power to the rear wheel.
