Review: Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Keyboard

Microsoft has put out quite a few peripherals for Windows 8 over the past few weeks. While the Sculpt Comfort keyboard is not as visually striking as say the Wedge keyboard, for those who desire an ergonomic layout, Microsoft has always been a top competitor in this market.

The Sculpt Comfort keyboard is a full size, desktop keyboard. The center arch and key layout is designed for ergonomics first, visual second. That's not to say that the keyboard is ugly, but this is for all day desktop warriors who want to keep their wrist happy.
The keyboard address all of the basics with a detachable wrist pad, fins that pop out to angle the keyboard, rubber feet to reduce vibration and your standard QWERTY layout with number pad. The keyboard will retail for $59.99.
The keyboard is made of a black plastic and if you have used other Microsoft keyboards, the materials feel nearly identical to other Microsoft keyboards that have hit the market. The keyboard is all plastic too, there is no metal present (well, maybe on the screws/circuitry).
There are several notable features that separate this keyboard from other Microsoft products and existing products on store shelves. The split spacebar, Windows 8 shortcut keys, hard F-lock switch, and of course, the ergonomic layout.
The split space bar is unique for, obviously, being split but it also works as a shortcut key. Right now, when you need to hit the backspace, it's a long travel distance for your pinky, Microsoft solved this with the split spacebar that makes the left side of the bar activate the backspace action. It's a simple shortuct but once you are used to it, it's a feature you lust for on every keyboard.
The Windows 8 shortcut keys are a welcomed addition that include play/pause, Volume Up/Down, mute, search, share, charms menu, settings, app switch, app bar, and a few others. There is also a hard lock switch to toggle between F keys and shortcut keys. The shortcut keys work well for their intended purpose but much like the Wedge Keyboard, we would love to see a fwd/back music button option along with play/pause to make it easier to skip songs with Spotify running in the background.
The ergonomic layout takes some time to adjust too from a standard flat keyboard. For those that transition from previous Microsoft ergonomic keyboards, you will have no issues with the switch. It only took a few minutes for those coming from a flat keyboard to make solid progress on keystroke accuracy on the Sculpt keyboard (we let two individuals test the keyboard to see how long it took them to transition to the new layout.)
The arch design is supportive and the keys are spaced appropriately for your fingers. Your wrist position, with the pad attached, feels natural and not obtrusive by being positioned at an odd angle like we have experienced on previous keyboards.
The concave key design keeps your fingers firmly in place when typing and the travel stroke of the keys is comparable to previous Microsoft comfort keyboards. The spacebar does seem to travel longer than the other keys, this could be placebo or the fact that the key is larger and visually it appears to travel further, but is not an inhabiting distance by any means.
The shortcut keys are quite firm to initiate given their size and reach from the home row but will likely break in over time. Again, not a major issue, but something to take note of.

The Sculpt Comfort keyboard is a Windows 8 ready peripheral that is a delight to use, there is no other way to say it. Despite some small keystroke and firmness qualms that are minuscule in the grand picture, we highly recommend this keyboard. If you are moving to Windows 8 and need a new ergonomic keyboard, look no further, your keyboard has arrived.

MSI teases ultrathin 15-inch gaming laptop

MSI has unveiled their latest gaming laptop at this year’s CeBIT. Dubbed GS60 Ghost Pro, the company claims it’s the world’s thinnest and lightest 15.6-inch gaming notebook, measuring in at less than 0.86-inch and weighing in at 4.4 pounds. Aside from this distinction the GS60 is also notable for sporting Nvidia’s upcoming flagship mobile chip, the GeForce GTX860M, and an optional “3K” 2,880 x 1,620 resolution display.
MSI’s latest gaming entry comes in a number of different models with varying specs as well as pricing between 1,600 and 2,000 euros ($2,200 to $2,800) depending on configuration. Although a full list of specs isn’t available at the moment, Engadget says options will include up to a Core i7 processor, dual SSD storage in Super RAID plus an additional hard drive, up to 16GB of RAM and the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard.
The base model will come with a full HD 1920 x 1080 panel and all can apparently power up to 3 independent external monitors to work, watch or play. The GT60 Ghost Pro also features a SteelSeries gaming keyboard with a full range of color options that can be customized to your liking.

Units are expected to start shipping in April.

MSI gaming laptop packs next-gen NVIDIA graphics and '3K' display into Ultrabook thickness

A nice little surprise here at CeBIT: A 15.6-inch laptop from MSI that gave us an early look at one of NVIDIA's unannounced 2014 laptop GPUs. MSI's reps at the event wouldn't reveal anything about the new graphics chip (which we guess is based on NVIDIA's Maxwell architecture) except that it should be able to handle many of the latest games at high settings on their unit's optional "3K" (2,880 x 1,620) display. The laptop itself is called the GS60 Ghost Pro and it's a pleasure to look at and to hold -- it's just three quarters of an inch thick (19.5mm) and 4.4 pounds (1.99kg) in weight. Check out the gallery below and you'll see that the machine has an understated design that should help it to appeal not only to gamers but also to power users looking for configurations up to Core i7, dual SSD storage (in Super RAID, if you wish) with additional HDD, plus 802.11ac WiFi. Expect units to start shipping in April priced between 1,600 and 2,000 euros ($2,200 to $2,800) depending on your spec choices.

Galaxy's new GeForce GTX 780 Ti Hall of Fame graphics card is a thing of beauty

The latest graphics card from manufacturer Galaxy is certainly a looker. Known as the GeForce GTX 780 Ti Hall of Fame Edition, the card features a unique white PCB that immediately brings back memories of the white motherboards that Soyo put out more than a decade ago.

The card recently set a new world record in 3DMark Fire Strike and Fire Strike Eagle (with the help of liquid nitrogen) that was no doubt possible in part due to the impressive power setup. The card features 16 phases for the core, two for the memory and three for the PLL. Elsewhere, the HOF edition uses high-end Panasonic tantalum capacitors, KEMET tantalum capacitors with a capacity of 330uF and MDU3606 MOSFETs from Magnachip.
Aside from this, we don’t know too much else about the card at this hour. It will be overclocked but by how much remains unknown. Just for reference, the card that broke the world record was pushed to 1866MHz on the core and 2000MHz on the memory – or in other words, pretty darn fast.
What’s more, we have no idea what the heatsink / cooler will look like. Odds are, much of that pretty PCB will be covered up by a giant cooler to keep temps under control. We do know that the memory will feature its own heatspreaders, however.

No word just yet on when the card will be available for purchase or how much you can expect to shell out for the opportunity.

Galaxy Tech has unveiled their latest GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF which features a massive white colored PCB with a brute power design which takes overclocking to the next level. Such tremendous is the power of this card that the company managed to achieve the 3DMark world record in FireStrike Extreme with some insane clock speeds on LN2 cooling. The Galaxy GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF V20 “Hall of Fame” edition blows away the previous GTX 780 Ti HOF card and instead of the GK110-300-A1 chip incorporates NVIDIA’s flagship GK110-425-B1 which is the fully unlocked Kepler core featuring 2880 Cuda cores and a 3 GB GDDR5 memory running across a 384-bit interface. The HOF edition won’t be kept clocked at reference clocks but would feature some impressive over the GHz frequencies and still leave abundance of room for overclocking enthusiasts. To achieve the world record, overclocker MadTse pushed the card beyond its limits by achieving a core clock of 1886 MHz and 2000 MHz memory clock (8 GHz effective) which is superb.
GALAXY Tech is renowned for their white colored PCBs and they have used the same design scheme on their ultimate GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF V20 with a beastly looking extended PCB which rivals that of the EVGA GTX GeForce 780 Ti KingPin and MSI GTX 780 TI Lightning. The PCB features 16 Phases (Core), 2 Phases (Memory) and 3 Phases (PLL).The PCB is equipped with the industry’s high-end Panasonic tantalum capacitor salong with the addition of several KEMET tantalum capacitors with a capacity of 330uF. On the back, MDU3606 MOSFET from Magnachip are featured. To deliver high-speed under overclocked specs, the memory is equipped with its own heat spreader. The PWM supply will come with its own set of heatsink in the final retail variant. Power is pumped through Dual 8-PIN and a single 6-Pin connector which equates to a TDP above 300 Watts.

Ofcourse, a GPU of such a design would require large amounts of cooling to keep the core and memory stable. Galaxy hasn’t revealed the final heatsink design for the card but we suspect it will be similar to the last HOF offering which featured heir flagship HOF series dual fan cooler which offers a much beefier heatsink design. The Galaxy GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF makes use of a densely packed aluminum fin array that’s conveyed heat through four 6mm heatpipes running through the copper base. The dual fans measure 9cm and have a total of 9 blades which are enough to handle some mighty overclocks. The shroud itself looks beast for the monster card that is the GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF.
For those who want extra power, Galaxy also ships a separate external power supply module which can be bought, offering an 8 Phase PWM with its own set of voltage adjustment and tuning points powered via three 8 Pin connectors. A must have for LN2 overclocking. No words on the price range for the card have been revealed but it will easily cross the $799 barrier considering the massive power design.

Intel's new 800 Gbps MXC cable will speed up data centers

New cable technology from Intel will soon be available to data centers and supercomputers, providing significant speed increases over what is already available. Known as MXC, a name which isn't an acronym, the cables are based on Intel's Silicon Photonics technology and support 800 Gbps transfers in each direction, or 1.6 Tbps as an aggregate.

Each cable is a collection of up to 64 separate fibers that support 25 Gbps transfers apiece: 32 are dedicated transmitting cables, and the other 32 are for receiving. Corning, which will manufacture the cables, will also make 8, 16 and 32 fiber cables available to customers at varying, but unspecified costs.
To get a sense of what sort of upgrade this is for data center environments, today's cables are typically capable of 10 Gbps transfers. Not only will MXC cables be faster, they'll also be higher density, more resistant to damage, and capable of pushing their top speeds over longer distances. Intel claims you'll be able to transfer at 800 Gbps at lengths up to 300 meters, giving data center and supercomputer engineers greater flexibility.
In the future Intel are hoping to increase the transfer rate of each line up to 50 Gbps, which would double the throughput of an MXC cable without the need for extra fibers. The company is also hoping to integrate MXC inside racks, creating a "more efficient architecture that separates CPU, storage, power, and networking resources into individual components that can be swapped out as needed."

MXC cable assemblies are currently being sampled to customers and will move to full production in Q3 2014. Going through and replacing copper interconnects with fiber won't be a cheap proposition, but Intel and Corning hope to make the technology a cheap competitor to existing solutions.

Element 14 launches high-res Wolfson Audio Card for Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi fans have something new to be excited about as the company recently launched an audio card. TheElement 14 Wolfson Audio Card, created with the help of Wolfson Audio, delivers high-res audio up to 24-bit/192KHz via the tiny PC’s P5 pins.
As you may already know, the Raspberry Pi has audio capabilities via HDMI but even still, many have turned to USB peripheral cards for added features. The Wolfson Audio solution eliminates the need for a USB device as it includes the following connections:

3.5mm jack for microphone input
3.5mm jack (4-pole) for headset/boom mic combination for gaming or VoIP applications

3.5 mm jack stereo line output for connection to devices such as external stereo amplifiers or powered speakers
S/PDIF input and outputs

Elsewhere, the board contains a class D power amplifier for external speakers with a connection to an external power source if needed and a small pin header for extra functions if they are low cost, already on-chip and don't require any further components.

The card retails for $33 which is actually a bit more than the $25 computer itself. Do note, however, it requires a revision 2 or later Raspberry Pi for connectivity purposes. Cards are available as of writing although Element 14’s website says fewer than 3,600 are in stock.
